'Tis the Plant Season: Silver Satin

Spring is here, and you know what that means: PLANTS! We’ve already established we love pretty things here at Filament, and plants are definitely some of our favorite pretty things. We just got our first plant restock of the season and are so excited to share them with you!

The first plant I want to highlight is the Scindapsus Silver Satin (commonly called the “Silver Satin” or “Satin Pothos”). It is a super low maintenance, beginner-friendly house plant that even the worst plant parents can handle. They’re also really neat looking and can bring the perfect amount of spice to your home, so it’s a winner all around!

The ‘Silver Satin’ is a tropical plant originating from the rainforests of Southeast Asia. When growing in its natural habitat, the vines can grow up to 10 feet long, with leaves as long as a foot! But don’t worry, these plants typically stay in the 3-5 feet range when grown indoors, so your living room is sure to not get too overpowered. In order for the plant to grow like this, you have to give it the water it needs to thrive. Now, what makes this plant so easy to care for is the fact that you only have to water it every 1-2 weeks. Keep in mind the conditions they typically grow in, though, and don’t overwater! Rainforest soil doesn’t stay soaking wet, so just give it enough water to go about an inch or so above the top soil and you’ll be good to go.

Another key element to plant survival is sunlight! With this particular plant buddy, they don’t love direct sunlight, so sitting it in a windowsill is only ideal if it is a north facing window. If you’re still unsure about the windows, leaving them on a shelf toward the middle of the room is also a great placement and will give way to plenty of sunlight. Lastly, as long as your home isn’t a furnace or an icebox temperature-wise, these plants will live and grow beautifully! They tend to love the 65-85 degree range, so keep your plant happy with that happy medium!

Now that you have the quick and easy run down of all things ‘Silver Satin’, you’re ready to conquer your first (or hundredth, we won’t judge either way) plant friend! This is just the first of many for our favorite season, so stop by and check out all of our newest friends and see which one suits your fancy. If you have any questions about any of them, feel free to ask any of our staff, we would love to help!
